None the less, I can imagine a retailer offering a discount for immediate cash payment and *for convenience* stipulating that it will be equal to the amount of sales tax. Of course he could offer a 5% or 7% discount instead, but an arbitrary figure will expose him to unwanted bargaining by the customer. Better to offer a discount equal to the (already calculated) sales tax, which the customer will recognise is a standard and therefore unnegotiable discount.
