I was focusing on the person choosing his / her own way is rejecting the family, not that the family rejects the person.

It is not trivial to decide to adopt a different set of minhagim than one's parents, especially picking and choosing. This would need to be asked to a Rav because a minhag may have the status of a neder (oath) and require hetaras nedarim.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11425059.post-87258760069629613142007-10-10T08:46:00.000-04:002007-10-10T08:46:00.000-04:00I'm a Wolfish Jew!I'm a Wolfish Jew!Jacob Da Jewhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03271564852032891769noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11425059.post-72368768662496927292007-10-09T17:56:00.000-04:002007-10-09T17:56:00.000-04:00Welcome. :)Welcome. :)Orthonomicshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07892074485262548496noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11425059.post-18699754215546275872007-10-09T14:19:00.000-04:002007-10-09T14:19:00.000-04:00Walter wants to learn Latin and there is a club fo...Walter wants to learn Latin and there is a club for it??

Yeah... surprised the heck out of me too!

It's one thing for someone without a tradition to do this, but someone who has strong roots would be rejecting his family and go out on his/her own.

Maybe. As you know, I am just such a person without any pre-existing traditions, so perhaps it was easier for me to "find my own place." Nonetheless, I feel sorry for the person who disowns his kid because the child refuses to wear a hat or believe *everything* that he believes. There comes a point when parents have to realize that their kids (who have grown up, of course) are independent thinking beings and can intelligently choose which hashkafos and minhagim they want to adopt without it being a personal insult to the parent.

The Wolf

The WolfBrooklynWolfhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03994285019137108636noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11425059.post-15101924758231705792007-10-09T13:58:00.000-04:002007-10-09T13:58:00.000-04:00Walter wants to learn Latin and there is a club fo...Walter wants to learn Latin and there is a club for it??

I like your approach and subscribe to it myself in a lot of ways. But I think this does not work for most Frum Jews because Judaism is so much about Mesorah / tradition. Children are expected to adopt the parents Minhagim, beliefs etc. It has been the bedrock of Yiddishkeit for many years.

I don't know where to draw the line on being a chooser from all over. It's one thing for someone without a tradition to do this, but someone who has strong roots would be rejecting his family and go out on his/her own.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11425059.post-79219693056855080042007-10-09T12:23:00.000-04:002007-10-09T12:23:00.000-04:00Sounds like standard Centrism to me; I don't under...Sounds like standard Centrism to me; I don't understand why you're so perplexed.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11425059.post-57923223741123000552007-10-09T00:27:00.000-04:002007-10-09T00:27:00.000-04:00I really identified with this post - I liked it a ...I really identified with this post - I liked it a lot, actually.
