Photos: Purim, A Still Life

I had a bit of time on Purim, so I decided to attempt a still life.

I tried this concept back in 2008, but I just couldn't get it right. At that point, I hadn't mastered the relationship between aperture and depth of field, I was still learning the basics of composition and I was using a less sophisticated camera. Last year I didn't have the time to try and correct it, but this year I had an opportunity on Purim afternoon. So I took out my tripod, arranged the elements of the picture on the dining room table and snapped away. This was the result:

Canon XSi, 18-55mm lens at 27mm, f/22, 1/4 second, ISO 800.

Critiques, comments and criticisms are welcome, encouraged and appreciated.

I see a white tablecloth, not blue - and there is no plastic. Who are you trying to impress?

:)

Actually, it was a white tablecloth with a blue base underneath. :)

I think it is wonderful.
Did you take classes to learn these things or were they "self taught".
I've been looking for good classes for ages now....

Nicely done, as usual.

the only change I would consider making is having the plate of hamentashen closer, if not on the Megillah to give it more connectivity especially since you have both masks on the Megillah.

A bottle of good wine somewhere in the frame could add something, or a glass of wine if there's not enough room to put a bottle.

erm, the masks look sexual?

G6,

No, everything I know about photography is self-taught (or from books).

Pesky,

You make a good point. The masks were actually not supposed to be on the megillah when I first tried this shot back in 2008. The only reason that they are on the megillah now is that they are helping to hold it open.

Bob,

That's an excellent idea.

Rabbi,

While the masks are clearly masculine and feminine, I don't think that makes them any more "sexual" than a tuxedo and bridal gown.

Rabbi, I find it rather ironic you feel the masks are sexual considering your own user pic.

Or maybe you just see sex everywhere.

It is not bekovidig to the Megilla.

BLD,

In what way? Please elaborate.
